Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups mixed berries (fresh or frozen cherries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and/or cranberries)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes
  • Salt to taste

Instructions
 

  • Add the mixed berries and water to a medium-sized saucepan. Set it over medium heat and let the berries cook for about 5 minutes. They should soften and begin to break down as they heat up.
  • Stir in the maple syrup (or honey), apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, garlic powder, red chili flakes, and a small pinch of salt. Mix everything together thoroughly so the flavors start to blend.
  • In a separate small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water to make a slurry. Pour this slowly into the berry mixture while whisking to avoid lumps.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 8 to 10 minutes. Stir now and then. It should thicken up slightly, and the flavors will become more concentrated.
  • Take the pan off the heat and stir in the melted butter. This gives the sauce a smoother, richer texture.
  • 6 Taste the sauce. If it needs more salt or heat, adjust with a little extra salt or chili flakes. Serve it warm or let it cool to room temperature. It’s great with grilled meats, vegetables, or anything that could use a sweet and tangy kick.

Notes
