Equipment

  • Frying pan or skillet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Knife and chopping board
  • Can opener (if using canned tomatoes)
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Serving bowl or pasta dish (for serving)

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for sautéing
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 14.5 oz crushed tomatoes (or fresh tomatoes, if preferred)
  • 125 ml 1/2 cup truffle sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a frying pan or skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until soft and translucent.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly to avoid burning.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes (or fresh chopped tomatoes) and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Allow it to cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken and the flavors will meld.
  • Add 125 ml (1/2 cup) of truffle sauce to the mixture. Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper. Adjust the seasoning to your taste. Allow the sauce to simmer for another 5-7 minutes.
  • Once the sauce is well-combined and thickened, it’s ready to be served. This truffle tomato sauce pairs beautifully with pasta, grilled meats, or roasted vegetables.

Notes

❖ Truffle Oil Choice: The type of truffle oil you choose can greatly affect the final flavor of the sauce. I prefer using white truffle oil, which has a milder and more delicate flavor. If you love a stronger, more earthy flavor, you could opt for black truffle oil instead.
❖ Fresh Tomatoes: If you’re using fresh tomatoes, make sure to blanch and peel them before adding them to the sauce. This step ensures a smoother texture in your sauce. Alternatively, canned tomatoes work perfectly for this recipe and save time!
❖ Make Ahead: This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The flavors will continue to develop as it sits. You can also freeze it for up to 2 months.
