Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk or spoon for stirring
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Blender or food processor (optional for smoother texture)
  • Airtight container or glass jar for storage

Ingredients

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup Dijon mustard for a smooth, mild flavor
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder adjust for spice preference
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke for depth
  • 1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup water
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Base

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, molasses, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, and liquid smoke. Stir to combine.

Step 2: Add the Sweet Potatoes

  • Add the cooked and mashed sweet potatoes to the saucepan. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and evenly combined. The sweet potatoes will help thicken the sauce and add a natural sweetness.

Step 3: Simmer the Sauce

  • Pour in the water and honey (or maple syrup), then bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Stir occasionally to prevent burning and allow the flavors to blend together. Let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 4: Adjust Seasoning

  • Taste the sauce and add salt and black pepper to your liking. If you prefer more sweetness, you can add a bit more honey or maple syrup. For extra heat, feel free to increase the chili powder or add a pinch of cayenne.

Step 5: Cool and Store

  • Once the sauce has thickened and the flavors are well balanced, remove it from the heat and let it cool to room temperature. Transfer the sauce into an airtight container or jar and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
