Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and chopping board

Ingredients

  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • cups red wine vinegar
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 1 small yellow onion finely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 3 cloves garlic minced (about 1 tablespoon)
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder optional for some heat
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

Sauté Aromatics:

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Combine Ingredients:

  • Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, smoked paprika, ground black pepper, chili powder (if using), yellow mustard, ground cinnamon, and cayenne pepper to the saucepan. Stir well to combine all ingredients.

Simmer:

  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Cool and Store:

  • Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the sauce to cool. Transfer it to a clean jar or bottle and refrigerate. The sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Notes

■ Spice Level: If you prefer a spicier BBQ sauce, feel free to increase the amount of chili powder or add a pinch of cayenne pepper. You can also add a dash of hot sauce for an extra kick.
■ Consistency: If you like your BBQ sauce thinner, just add a little water to adjust the consistency. On the other hand, if you prefer a thicker sauce, let it simmer longer.
■ Sweetness: The brown sugar and molasses give the sauce a rich sweetness, but if you’re looking for a lighter version, you can substitute the brown sugar with honey or agave nectar.
