Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer (or whisk and spoon)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cookie sheet
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks for a rustic texture
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts optional, for added crunch and texture

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar using an electric mixer or a whisk. Continue mixing until the mixture is light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  • Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and mix until everything is well combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. Once combined, fold in the chocolate chips (or chunks) and chopped walnuts (if using).
  • Use a cookie scoop or spoon to drop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown, but the center is still soft.
  • Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Butter: Make sure your butter is softened to room temperature for the best texture. Don’t use melted butter, as it will affect the cookie’s structure.
Chocolate Chips: You can swap out the semi-sweet chocolate chips for dark chocolate or milk chocolate if you prefer a sweeter or more intense flavor.
Storage: These cookies keep well in an airtight container for up to a week. You can also freeze the dough for up to 3 months, so you always have fresh cookies on hand!
