Ingredients

  • 28 ounces tomato puree
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup prepared yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup dark corn syrup
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, adjust for heat level

Instructions

Step 1: Combine the Base Ingredients

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the tomato puree, apple cider vinegar, dark brown sugar, honey, lemon juice, yellow mustard, and dark corn syrup. Stir the mixture together over medium heat until the ingredients are well combined.

Step 2: Add the Spices

  • Once the base ingredients are blended, add the chili powder, dry mustard, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using) to the saucepan. Stir the sauce well to incorporate all of the spices evenly.

Step 3: Simmer the Sauce

  • Add water to the mixture, and bring it to a gentle simmer. Stir occasionally to make sure the sauce doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Let the sauce simmer for about 25-30 minutes, allowing it to thicken and the flavors to meld together.

Step 4: Adjust Consistency

  • Check the sauce’s consistency. If you prefer a thicker sauce, let it simmer a little longer. For a thinner sauce, you can add a little more water until you achieve your desired texture.

Step 5: Cool and Store

  • Once the sauce has thickened and the flavors have developed, remove it from the heat. Allow it to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, store the BBQ sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
