Ingredients
  

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 28 ounces tomato puree
  • cup yellow mustard prepared
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • cups apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 3 cups water
  • ¼ cup dark corn syrup see note below
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  • 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions
 

Step 1:

  • In a large saucepan, pour in the tomato puree and water. Whisk together over medium heat to combine and warm through.

Step 2:

  • Add the yellow mustard, brown sugar, granulated sugar, apple cider vinegar, and dark corn syrup to the saucepan. Stir until everything is well blended.

Step 3:

  • Mix in the garlic powder, black pepper, paprika, chili powder, dry mustard, cayenne, onion powder, and kosher salt. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices.

Step 4:

  • Squeeze in the fresh lemon juice and give the sauce another good stir. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.

Step 5:

  • Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for about 35–45 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning on the bottom.

Step 6:

  • After it has thickened slightly and developed a deep, rich flavor, taste and adjust seasoning if needed. If you prefer a thicker sauce, simmer a bit longer.

Step 7:

  • Remove from heat and let the sauce cool. Pour into sterilized jars or bottles. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for longer storage.
