Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer or whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 9×13 inch baking pan,
  • Spatula
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

Cake:

  • 1 box 18 oz chocolate cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 1 can 14 oz sweetened condensed milk

Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup 1 cube unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Instructions

Prepare the cake batter:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, eggs, oil, and water. Beat with an electric mixer or whisk by hand for about 2-3 minutes until smooth and well blended.

Bake the cake:

  • Pour the batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Add sweetened condensed milk:

  • As soon as the cake is done, remove it from the oven and, while still warm, poke small holes all over the surface using a fork or skewer. Slowly pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake, allowing it to soak in. Let the cake cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.

Prepare the frosting:

  • In a medium bowl, cream the softened butter until smooth. Add the buttermilk and mix well. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating continuously until the frosting is smooth, creamy, and spreadable. Add more buttermilk if needed to reach the desired consistency.

Frost the cake:

  • Once the cake has cooled completely, spread the frosting evenly over the top using a spatula. Make sure to cover all edges for a neat finish.

Serve and enjoy:

  • Slice the cake into 12 pieces. Serve at room temperature. Store leftovers in an airtight container, refrigerated for up to 4 days.

Notes

For an extra moist cake, make sure to use boiling water as instructed. It helps bloom the cocoa, intensifying the chocolate flavor.
You can swap vegetable oil for melted butter for a richer taste, but it might change the texture slightly. Feel free to decorate with chocolate shavings, fresh berries, or a dusting of powdered sugar for a festive touch.
