Equipment

  • Cake pop sticks
  • Styrofoam block or cake pop stand
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Double boiler or microwave-safe bowl
  • Baking sheet lined with parchment paper

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix plus ingredients listed on the box: eggs, oil, water
  • 1 cup chocolate frosting store-bought or homemade
  • 1 package candy melts chocolate or any color of your choice
  • Sprinkles or decorations optional

Instructions

Step 1: Bake the Cake

  • Prepare the Cake: Follow the instructions on the chocolate cake mix box to prepare the cake batter. Bake the cake according to package instructions. Allow it to cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare the Cake Pops

  • Crumble the Cake: Once the cake has cooled, crumble it into fine crumbs using your hands or a fork in a large bowl.
  • Add Frosting: Add the chocolate frosting to the crumbled cake. Start with 1/2 cup and mix well. Continue adding frosting gradually until the mixture holds together like dough.

Step 3: Shape and Chill

  • Form Cake Balls: Roll the cake mixture into balls, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Chill: Refrigerate the cake balls for at least 1 hour, or until firm.

Step 4: Dip and Decorate

  • Melt Candy Melts: Melt the candy melts in a double boiler or microwave-safe bowl according to package instructions until smooth.
  • Dip the Cake Pops: Dip the tip of each cake pop stick into the melted candy melts, then insert it into a cake ball. Dip each cake pop into the melted candy melts, swirling gently to coat evenly.
  • Decorate: Immediately add sprinkles or decorations while the candy coating is still wet. Place each cake pop upright in a styrofoam block or cake pop stand to set completely.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients and let the chocolate coating set completely. Store cake pops in an airtight container: at room temperature for 3 days, in the refrigerator for 1 week, or in the freezer for 1 month.
