Equipment

  • Mixing bowls (1 large, 1 medium)
  • Electric mixer or hand whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula or wooden spoon
  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Cooling rack
  • Zester or fine grater

Ingredients

  • 1 cup 226g unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup 150g granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup 165g brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp orange zest from 1–2 oranges
  • 2 1/4 cups 280g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup 175g semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup 90g chopped dark chocolate or chocolate chunks (optional)
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions

  • Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy—this should take about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, making sure each is fully incorporated. Mix in the vanilla extract and orange zest. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the butter mixture. Stir just until everything is combined—avoid over mixing.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips and chopped chocolate. If you’re including nuts, add them now as well. For cookies that are thicker and chewier, chill the dough for about 30 minutes before baking.
  • Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between each scoop. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the centers are just set.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

❖ Perfect for Gifting: These cookies make an excellent homemade gift for friends and family. Wrap them up in a cute box or jar for a thoughtful, delicious present!
❖ Adjust the Zest: If you love the orange flavor, feel free to increase the orange zest to suit your taste. It adds a lovely, vibrant punch to each bite.
❖ Chocolate Variations: Try using milk or white chocolate chips for a sweeter twist on this recipe, or even mix different types of chocolate for a more complex flavor profile.
❖ Freezing Tip: If you want to bake these cookies later, freeze the dough in individual portions. When you’re ready to bake, just pop them straight into the oven—no thawing needed!
