Chipotle hot sauce is a smoky, spicy condiment made from dried chipotle peppers, vinegar, garlic, and other seasonings. To make it, blend soaked chipotle peppers with vinegar, garlic, and spices for a smooth, flavorful sauce. This versatile hot sauce adds depth and heat to tacos, grilled meats, and various dishes.

Measuring spoons and cups
Small spatula
Knife and cutting board (if using fresh cilantro)
- 3 –4 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce canned
- 2 tbsp adobo sauce from the chipotle can
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup sour cream or Mexican crema
- 1 tbsp fresh lime juice about ½ lime
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp ground cumin
- 2 tbsp fresh cilantro optional, chopped
- Salt to taste around ¼ tsp, adjust as needed
- 1 –2 tbsp water to adjust consistency
Combine the chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, mayonnaise, sour cream, lime juice, garlic powder, cumin, and cilantro in a blender or food processor.
Blend until smooth and creamy. If the sauce is too thick, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water to loosen it up.
Taste and adjust with more lime juice or salt if needed. Pour into a container or jar. Use right away or store in the fridge for up to a week.
If you’re sensitive to heat, consider adjusting the number of chipotle peppers you use. Chipotles have a nice smokiness with medium heat, but you can control how fiery the sauce gets.
For a milder version, start with fewer peppers and add a touch of honey or more sugar to balance out the spice.
On the other hand, if you’re a heat-seeker like me, feel free to experiment with adding a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper to increase the heat!
