Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk or spoon for stirring
  • Large bowl (for tossing wings)
  • Frying pan or deep fryer
  • Measuring spoons
  • Tongs or slotted spoon (for frying wings)
  • Serving plate or dish

Ingredients

For the Chicken Wings:

  • 10-12 chicken wings depending on serving size
  • Oil for frying vegetable oil or any oil of your choice

For the Honey BBQ Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke for that smoky flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, adjust for heat

Instructions

Prepare the Chicken Wings

  • ● Start by heating oil in a deep fryer or large frying pan over medium heat. You’ll need enough oil to submerge the chicken wings.
  • ● Season the wings lightly with salt and pepper. Fry the chicken wings in batches until golden brown and crispy. This should take about 8-10 minutes per batch. Once cooked, remove them and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Make the Honey BBQ Sauce

  • ● While the wings are frying, you can begin preparing the BBQ sauce. In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, white vinegar, honey, molasses, liquid smoke, black pepper, paprika, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  • ● Place the saucepan over medium heat and whisk the ingredients together until they are well combined and the sauce begins to heat up.
  • ● Allow the sauce to simmer gently for about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent it from burning. The sauce will thicken and the flavors will meld together.

Coat the Wings with Sauce

  • ● Once the sauce is ready, it’s time to coat the crispy wings. Place the fried wings in a large bowl and pour the honey BBQ sauce over them. Toss the wings in the sauce to ensure each piece is generously coated. You can use tongs or a spoon to make this easier.
  • Serve and Enjoy
  • ● Transfer the coated wings to a serving plate and enjoy immediately while they’re hot and crispy. You can garnish with extra paprika or fresh herbs, like parsley, for a pop of color if desired.

Notes

❖ Storage: If you have leftover honey BBQ sauce, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. It can also be used as a dipping sauce for other dishes like fries or burgers.
❖ Spice Level: Adjust the cayenne pepper to your preference. For a milder sauce, skip the cayenne entirely. If you love spice, add more cayenne or even a dash of hot sauce to take it up a notch.
❖ Crispier Wings: For extra crispy wings, try double frying them. Fry them once, let them rest for a few minutes, and then fry them again for an even crispier texture.
