Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking tray
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Cheese grater (if using block cheese)
  • Deep fryer or frying pan (for frying)
  • Slotted spoon (if frying)
  • Paper towels (for draining)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of bread crumbs preferably fresh or homemade
  • 1 cup of shredded cheese mozzarella, cheddar, or a blend
  • 1 cup of diced bread white or whole wheat
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning or herbs of your choice
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/4 cup of finely chopped herbs like parsley or basil
  • Oil for frying vegetable, canola, or olive oil

Instructions

Prepare the Bread Mixture:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the diced bread, shredded cheese, egg, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well incorporated. If using fresh bread, it should absorb the egg and bind well.

Form the Cheese Balls:

  • Take a small amount of the mixture and roll it into a ball, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Repeat until all the mixture is shaped into balls.

Chill (Optional):

  • For extra firmness, place the formed cheese balls on a baking tray and refrigerate for about 30 minutes. This step helps them hold their shape during cooking.

Heat the Oil:

  • In a deep fryer or a frying pan, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat. You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small piece of bread into it; if it sizzles and rises to the surface, it’s ready.

Fry the Cheese Balls:

  • Carefully add the cheese balls to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to turn them as needed.

Drain and Serve:

  • Once cooked, remove the cheese balls from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes
