Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring spoons
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Blender (optional for smooth sauce)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 cup diced red onion
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the diced red onion and minced garlic, and sauté for about 5 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in the blueberries, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, cayenne, salt, and water.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Let it cook for 20-25 minutes, allowing the blueberries to break down and the sauce to thicken.
  • Once thickened, remove from heat. For a smoother texture, blend the sauce using an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender.
  • Let the sauce cool to room temperature before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Notes

❖ Customize the Flavor
Feel free to adjust the ingredients to match your taste. If you prefer a more tangy sauce, increase the apple cider vinegar.
For a sweeter version, add a little more brown sugar or honey. Experimenting with flavors can help you find the perfect balance for your palate.
❖ Alternative Fruits
If you don’t have blueberries on hand, you can substitute other fruits such as blackberries, raspberries, or even strawberries.
These fruits will create a slightly different flavor profile but still provide the sweet and fruity base for a delicious BBQ sauce.
