Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer or hand whisk
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Cooling rack (optional)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cookie scoop or spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 12 oz package of chocolate chips
  • Walnuts optional
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the cookies from sticking.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside for later.

Cream the Butter and Sugars:

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter (or margarine), granulated sugar, and packed brown sugar using an electric mixer or hand whisk. Continue mixing until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla:

  • Add the eggs, one at a time, to the butter-sugar mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract until fully combined.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:

  • Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the dough.

Add Chocolate Chips and Walnuts:

  • Stir in the chocolate chips and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed. Use a spoon or cookie scoop to drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing the cookies about 2 inches apart.

Bake the Cookies:

  • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are golden brown. The centers may still be soft but will firm up as they cool.

Cool and Serve:

  • Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve and enjoy your delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies!

Notes

Substitute for Butter: If you’re looking to make this recipe dairy-free, you can substitute the butter with a non-dairy butter alternative. Just make sure it has a similar texture to regular butter.
Gluten-Free Version: If you’re gluten intolerant, you can swap out the all-purpose flour for a 1-to-1 gluten-free baking flour blend.
